My Newborn Style: Light and Airy or Dark and Moody? | Cambridge Massachusetts Newborn Photographer

August 17, 2023

There's a lot of talk online these days about whether a photographer's style is "dark and moody" or "light and airy." Anyone who views my portfolio will immediately notice that most of my images seem to be in darker spaces and have a lot of enriched color associated with them! The "light and airy" camp tend to edit with increased highlights and often look like a space is filled with a ton of natural light (but more often than not, it's light that is coming from an off camera flash) in addition to desaturating and muting the color spectrum in images. The "dark and moody" style, which is one I identify with a lot more, is one that emphasizes a warmer tone, amplifies contrasting colors, and tends to give a more documentary look to photos given natural light and shadows are used to spotlight facial features. Though I tend to be more of the latter, my editing style can also gravitate towards a more "light and airy" look if a home is extremely well lit with natural light or the personality of my clients call for a more bright and less contrasty style. However, most folks who choose to work with me tend to have colorful homes that match the general tone of my portfolio...which is more colorful, creative, edgy, dark, and vivid.
